Erg Chigaga is a vast desert erg situated in southeast Morocco, around 500km from Marrakech and 310km from Ouarzazate. Its dunes are among the tallest globally, soaring up to 400m high. Formed by the prevailing winds from the Atlantic Ocean, the sand was carried inland, eventually becoming part of the Sahara Desert. As the Sahara expanded, Erg Chegaga became enclosed within its borders.
Erg Chigaga is a renowned expanse of Sahara Desert sand dunes situated in southeastern Morocco, near M’Hamid El Ghizlane. Encompassing an area exceeding 30 square miles, it boasts some of the world’s tallest dunes, reaching heights surpassing 650 feet. As one of Morocco’s nine Ergs—vast regions of wind-blown sand—Erg Chigaga formed over countless years alongside the expansion of the Sahara Desert. Visitors are drawn to this location for hiking, climbing, and the awe-inspiring vistas of the desert terrain. The ideal time to visit Erg Chigaga is during the winter months when temperatures are cooler and strong winds are less likely to disturb the sand.
Erg Chigaga, located in the southwestern part of Morocco, holds the distinction of being the largest erg in the country, spanning an impressive area of 35 km by 15 km. This expansive erg formed gradually as windblown sand and dust accumulated over time. As part of the arid Sahara Desert, rainfall is scarce, but occasional showers can lead to flooding and the creation of towering dunes reaching hundreds of metres in height. Erg Chigaga’s grandeur and intricate patterns make it a sought-after destination for tourists, particularly those seeking captivating sunsets.
